HISTORY
The Hall was built in 1895, a gift from a local benefactor for the people of Cholesbury and Hawridge. It is a registered charity run by an elected committee of local people and three Trustees who are part of the Committee. Over the years it has been the venue for many village activities starting with a Men's Club, who acquired a large billiards table and made themselves comfortable around a pot-bellied stove in the main Hall with papers brought up from Chesham.
Located on the edge of Cholesbury and Hawridge Common, in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty it has been at the centre of Village Activities for over 120 years. Though of great historic importance, next to a well preserved Iron Age fort and the ancient church of St Lawrence, it has been recently redecorated, new kitchen and toilets fitted, providing an idyllic yet fully modernised setting for your special occasion.
It is very adaptable and many of the activities held here spill out onto the Common. There have been Village Fetes, Sunday teas raising money for many good causes, plays and pantomimes, exhibitions of art and commemorating War and Peace and the longevity of many sovereigns. We now host two weekly art groups, a gentle exercise class, two Pilates classes and the Community choir as well as many local societies. Recently the Hall was used as the setting for the BBC comedy series, Up the Women!
The Hall continues to change and adapt to modern times but remains itself a welcoming place full of character and ambiance. ideal for your party or function.
